This video covers a specific sequence during my "Constructing Lyricism in Charcoal: Copying Fechin" self-paced drawing course, as I expand on a master copy that had been initiated in vine charcoal (the beginning of this drawing is also demonstrated in the course). Preparations were important for this workshop, in order to achieve the proper “look” of the paper. This is why I posted a special paper presentation lesson for my students (which is also on this YouTube account).
Our goal is to mimic and learn from Nicolai Fechin’s (1881-1955) incomparable blend of “paper noise,” with an offsetting, hyper-linear, approach that has made his work legendary. Form making, finesse, flair and strategic accenting in my demonstration provide a sufficiently complex array of ideas for this video. Drawing concepts like “friability” expand upon charcoal's potential. Research is also highly significant – because the overall course is appreciated as a research trip, as well as an open discussion on how to navigate through a master copy, as we rebound from drawing errors while learning. I maintain that, ultimately, all variations from “the perfect copy” reflect your own temperament, and how you see.
The full workshop includes a slide presentation, a study on the concept of modulating asymmetry in drawing, a discussion of the morphology in a lower face, as well as the demonstration of an additional master copy.
