In this hybrid symposium, organised by the CEU Department of Political Science (May 25, 2023), a panel of scholars discussed James Mahoney’s recent book, The Logic of Social Science. Speakers James Mahoney, Gordon Fulcher Professor in Decision-Making, Professor of Sociology, and Professor of Political Science, Northwestern University Nancy Cartwright, Professor of Philosophy, Durham University Rosa Runhardt, Philosopher of Science, Radboud University Hilde Van Meegdenburg, Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Institute of Political Science, Leiden University Moderator: Carsten Q. Schneider, Pro-Rector for External Relations and Professor of Political Science at Central European University (CEU) The book develops a scientific constructivist approach that uses set-theoretic analysis to avoid essentialist biases in the production of knowledge. This scientific constructivist approach recognizes that social categories depend on collective understandings for their existence, but it insists that this recognition need not hinder the use of explicit procedures for the rational assessment of truth. Mahoney argues that set-theoretic analysis enables scholars to avoid the pitfalls of essentialism and produce findings that rest on a firm scientific foundation.
