This Sunday, Japan was hit by a record-breaking snowstorm!
The Hokuriku region, located on the coast of the Sea of Japan, was hit hardest. Areas such as Niigata Prefecture, Yamagata Prefecture, and Aomori Prefecture set records for the heaviest snowfall in history.
In Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, the snowfall reached 32 centimeters in 6 hours on February 22, setting a record high in the city's February observation history. Local residents said that the amount of snow was completely different from previous years and it was "really terrible."
In Aomori Prefecture, the snow depth in the Suoyu area reached more than 5 meters, setting a local record in 12 years. Such an amount of snow was "unbelievable" to many residents. The snow accumulation in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture also reached 160 centimeters, setting a record high in the city's history.
The situation in Uonuma City and Tsunan Town in Niigata Prefecture is equally shocking. In Uonuma City, the snow depth exceeded 3.8 meters, and in Tsunan Town it was as high as 3.69 meters. These data undoubtedly set new local historical records.
Even in areas that don't normally see much snow, this cold wave brought an astonishing amount of snow. In Shiga Prefecture in the Kansai region, snowfall reached 14 centimeters in six hours by the morning of February 23, and local residents lamented that they had "never seen such heavy snow."
From Hokkaido to Kyushu, the whole of Japan was affected. The meteorological department predicts that in the next 24 hours, the mountainous areas in the Hokuriku region may receive 70 centimeters of snow, and the coastal areas in the Tohoku region may receive 60 centimeters of snow. Even in the Kanto, Kinki and Shikoku regions, which have traditionally seen little snow, there is a possibility of snow accumulation this time.
The cause of this cold wave can be traced back to early February. At that time, a strong cold air mass blew into the Sea of Japan from the Siberian continent. At the same time, the winter pressure pattern also changed, allowing this cold wave to continue to wreak havoc in Japan. The meteorological department predicts that the impact of this cold wave may last for 2-3 weeks.
Sure enough, starting from mid-February, various parts of Japan were hit by strong winds and snowstorms. The cold wind was howling, the snow was flying, everything was white, the road was covered with thick snow, the traffic was paralyzed, and some areas experienced serious power outages and water shortages. This unprecedented "white disaster" has forced local residents and tourists into a state of survival.
