Mehri Jafari was a 43-year old alpinist from Iran. In 2021, she planned to solo Pobeda and Lenin Peak as part of a previously unfinished project.
She was an experienced climber and a member of the London Mountaineering Club.
Jafari originally went alone to Pobeda. She had previously regularly climbed mountains and made solo ascents. She was experienced in that region. In 2008, she climbed the neighbouring Khan Tengri peak (7,010 meters) alone, becoming the first Iranian woman to do so.
But she knew that she was not technically prepared to climb Pobeda alone. Her plan was to join other climbers and go up via the normal fixed route. She joined a team of four from Iran. However, she struggled to keep up with them on the way up.
At 6,300 meters, she slipped and fell down the side of the mountain, and disappeared onto the glacier far below. Subsequent search and rescue mission was failed as she was buried by avalanche.
