In today's story, we go back 42 years ago to 1983.
It's February 14, and a girl named Darlene Tucker has just found out that she is pregnant at the age of 16. After telling her mother the news a massive argument between the two erupts causing Darlene to Run away from home to her boyfriend's house in Oakville. She stays with him for the next few months until an argument between the couple starts over a secret boyfriend she has in Toronto.
After she left, nobody knows exactly where she went. Worried about her well-being, the father of her boyfriend in Oakville reported her missing to Halton Regional Police. In the months following her disappearance, Darlene Tucker made several calls to her mother from a pay phone in Huntsville, Ontario. This would be the last time her mother would ever hear from her.
Darlene was not the only one who had disappeared at that time. Her friend Jan” Stonehouse vanished on August 8, 1983, from her home in Oakville. She was also pregnant at the time. The similarity of these two disappearances was too coincidental to ignore, and the Halton Police believe the two cases are connected.
In 1985, Tucker was spotted working as a waitress in Toronto. In 1987, there was a confirmed sighting of Darlene and Jan together in the Haliburton area where the Tucker family had a vacation trailer.
This was the last confirmed sighting of both girls who are still missing to this day, 42 years later. Tucker’s DNA was tested to determine if she was among the victims of notorious serial killer Robert Pickton, however, no match was found.
In many ways, this story reads like a typical runaway, determined to make it on her own.
It's thought that both girls likely went voluntarily missing. The police don't believe that the girls werent met with foul play and it's assumed that they are living their lives, under aliases, somewhere.
Today Darlene's Family home sits abandoned rotting away packed with personal belongings and hundreds of family photos. With a massive redevelopment occurring in the area, the house will be demolished shortly.
