This video documents the history of the sea shanty and folk song “Shenandoah” [Roud 324]. Many traditional recordings of the song, including versions sung by actual shantymen and sailors who had previously performed them in the nineteenth century, have been compiled and presented alongside some popular recordings. The singers themselves are discussed if there was interesting information available about them. Otherwise, the recordings are played over historical information about the song itself. Depending on feedback, this may be the first in a series.
