Pakistan, an Islamic republic, has grappled with Shia-Sunni sectarian tensions since its inception. The rift widened during the 1980s due to the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet-Afghan War, and General Zia-ul-Haq's regime, which favored Sunni ideologies. Today, this divide has led to violence, targeted killings, bombings, and attacks on mosques and processions, resulting in social divisions and sectarian polarization.
Key areas of conflict include Karachi, Quetta, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Theological differences, political and economic interests, foreign influences from Iran and Saudi Arabia, and a lack of education and awareness contribute to these rivalries. However, efforts toward unity are underway.
Interfaith dialogues, education and awareness programs, community engagement, and government initiatives like the National Action Plan (2015) aim to curb sectarian violence. Civil society organizations advocate for tolerance and peace. Moderate voices, inclusive education, economic cooperation, cultural exchange programs, and enhanced law enforcement are crucial for promoting unity.
Notable initiatives include the Pakistan Interfaith League, Sunni-Shia Unity Council, and National Commission for Interfaith Dialogue. Key figures like Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, Allama Iqbal, and Javed Ahmad Ghamidi promote unity. Despite challenges from radicalization, foreign interference, and social and economic disparities, Pakistan can overcome sectarian divisions by addressing theological differences through dialogue, promoting education and awareness, encouraging community engagement, strengthening moderate voices, and maintaining government support and enforcement.
To foster a harmonious society, it's essential to understand the complexities and work together. By doing so, Pakistan can move toward a future where Shia and Sunni Muslims coexist peacefully, united in their shared Islamic values and commitment to a prosperous Pakistan.
