The Shiga-Kusatsu Kogen Route is a scenic road located 150 km northwest of Tokyo.
This area is known for its high volcanic activity and features many famous hot springs, or onsen in Japanese, such as Kusatsu Onsen and Jigokudani Onsen, which is renowned for monkeys soaking in the baths.
One of the highlights of this route is Shibu Pass, which reaches an altitude of 2,172 meters, making it the highest point on Japan's national roads.
The journey begins at Route 145 near the Yamba Dam on the Gunma Prefecture side. It ascends to Shibu-Toge Pass and then descends to Nakano City via Route 252, passing through Kusatsu Onsen, Shibu Pass, and the Shiga-Kusatsu Highland.
