Sichuan-Tibet Highway driving tour from Chamdo City Tibet to Dege County Sichuan, on the G317 China National Highway.
Like The Sichuan-Tibet Highway G318, Highway G317 is part of the Sichuan-Tibet Highways. it is also known as the Sichuan-Tibet North Route. National Highway G317 starts in Chengdu, Sichuan and ends in Nagqu, Tibet, with a total length of 2,034 kilometers. Because its strategic position is not as important as G318, it has been neglected by the country. In the old days, G317 was called the Road to Hell, and it would pass through a long section of uninhabited area. Now the road has been renovated and the road conditions are much better.
First, we will set out from Qamdo to Jiangda. The scenery along the way is amazing. At first, we will be accompanied by the Zaqu River, then along the Damala Mountain Canyon, through the jungle, alpine grassland, and over Songlayi Mountain (4481 meters). About 30 kilometers after driving through Jiangda County, many red houses and golden roofs of temples appeared on the hillside. They were built along the mountains and rivers, and were majestic. They are the auspicious Wala Temple by the river, the Wala Deqin Temple on Deqin Mountain, and the Wuming Buddhist College.
After passing Wala Temple, the mountain road begins to become rugged, and then we pass through the Aila Mountain Tunnel and not far away is the Gangtuo Bridge on the Jinsha River, which is the dividing line between Tibet and Sichuan.
