After the Overland Campaign, Union General-in-Chief, Ulysses S. Grant moved the Army of the Potomac across the James River and attempted to take Petersburg, Virginia. That city represented the location where Confederate General Robert E. Lee and the Capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, got their supplies, using the multiple railroads into the city. For days, Grant battered Petersburg in an attempt to quickly cut Richmond and Lee off from its supplies, but he ultimately fails in this first attempt. Then, a siege begins, the Siege of Petersburg.
