I was first introduced to silicon bronze filler metal when I was moonlighting at a sheet metal fab shop.
The boss brought me a hydraulic line from the forklift and handed me some silicon bronze and told me to fix the worn leaking area.
So I cleaned it up, ran a bead on the thickest areas around the worn area, and then sealed the leak.
And I remember thinking to myself…"this silicon bronze stuff is awesome”.
Tig welding steel with silicon bronze is technically “brazing” because the melting temp of silicon bronze is above 840F but below the melting point of the base metal.
Because melting point of silicon bronze is so much lower than that of carbon steel, Tig brazing with silicon bronze is very useful for repairing worn areas in thin wall tubing, leaks in steel tanks or reservoirs, and lots of other applications.
