(This is the first of three videos I'm making in response to the contest launched last Friday.)
I was given a starter culture of this species by its co-author Dr. Piotr Naskrecki back in 2012 to help, as their name Simandoa conserfariam reflects, to conserve/preserve the species. They are only known to have lived in a cave system in the country of Guinea, in West Africa. That caved was destined to be mined for bauxite, destroying their only known habitat. Since then, I have cultured them for 8 years and helped to disperse them to other keepers. If you have a culture of them, please let us know in the comments down below!
This species tells a story in a way that few other species do. A species that was destined for extinction, it owes its unfortunate status in the wild, as well as its preservation, to humans. It is a wonderful example of vice vs virtue, and here a testament to the respect and love we hobbyists are capable of for our fellow Earthlings.
