We all have those moments, days, or even weeks at a time where life just feels overwhelming. Today, I thought I'd share some simple self-soothing techniques that can help you activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that helps you relax).
I demonstrate the two techniques in the 3 minute video below, as well as give written instructions below:
HUG
Cross your arms bringing your right hand to your left shoulder and left hand to your right shoulder. Apply gentle but firm pressure moving from the shoulders to the elbows and back up again.
Add in some humming to a song of your choosing! Doing so helps activate the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is connected to your vocal cords and the muscles at the back of your throat and it runs down to the abdomen. It's the longest nerve in our body and helps regulate many critical aspects of human physiology, including the heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, digestion, and even speaking. Activating this nerve basically tells your brain all is well, stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system to relax you.
So while it may seem silly, it is truly beneficial!
BUTTERFLY
Cross your hands over your heart use your fingers to tap on your collar bone and take some deep breaths in and out.
These simple body-based techniques will help your body become calm and centered. And when you relax the body, it relaxes the mind. Give it a go, and let me know what you think!
