May I invite you to sit back for a good while and savour this film about David Lean's career? It really is very, very good.
Made in 1985 as a South Bank Show Special, this really top notch tribute to David Lean includes, among others, Melvyn Bragg (the interviewer for the South Bank Show), Alec Guinness, Omar Sharif, and Steven Spielberg.
Clips from many of his most notable films are featured, such as "Brief Encounter," "Hobson's Choice," "Great Expectations," "Doctor Zhivago," "Lawrence of Arabia," and "The Bridge on the River Kwai". It is a compelling and unique insight into Lean's method and vision.
This video content was uploaded by FunFillums a couple of years ago, but I felt the VHS tape luminance and saturation pretty bad, so I had a go at correcting it here. It is only a slight improvement because the off-air VHS tape source was so poor to begin with. Alas, I wasn't able to correct the audio drop-outs at start - which is a great pity because the music here was composed by a very young Howard Goodall!
