The grounds of Shinjuku Gyoen were part of the Edo residence given to Kiyonari Naito, a vassal of the Tokugawa Ieyasu family, when he entered Edo Castle in 1590 after Toyotomi Hideyoshi granted him the eight provinces of Sekihachishu.
It is said that Ieyasu gave the estate to his trusted vassal for military purposes, such as guarding the area, since it was an important location where the Kamakura Road crossed the road that ran west from Edo, which later became the Koshu Kaido and Ome Kaido, and the Kamakura Road.
