While the story is intermediate level, even beginners can listen to begin training their ears to hear the sounds of Japanese.
Tips: Relax in a comfortable position in your bed. Turn the volume down until you hear her voice and a hint of the rain. Slip into a restful sleep and wake up wondering what happened to poor Zenchi Naigu!
The story explores themes of obsessive vanity and how this affects those around us.
The Story:
Zenchi Naigu is a Buddhist priest who is obsessed with his overly long nose--a nose that drops to his chin. He pretends to not care about it, but he spends all his private time in front of the mirror and searching ancient texts to discover ways to shrink it.
Then, one day, it does shrink! However, everyone now realizes Naigu has been obsessed with his nose and they make fun of him for his vanity. This continues until Naigu, happily, wakes up with his nose its original length.
