We've built our 6x10 cargo trailer conversion just over 3 years ago and have enjoyed adventures every since. We initially thought about buying a small RV, but after reviewing the costs involved and the limitations of an RV, we decided to build out our own cargo trailer and haven't regretted it for a second. If you're looking at building your own cargo trailer or purchasing a small RV, there are many things to think about. So what's it going to be: small rv or cargo trailer conversion - what works for you?
In this video we're doing a comparison of our cargo trailer conversion to the Taxa Outdoors Tigermoth, a small RV that we saw on our recent visit to the Louisiana Boat and RV show in Opelousas, Louisiana. The Tigermoth is a very small RV, actually smaller than our cargo trailer, more in like with a teardrop trailer. It's obviously built for adventure and we really liked the aggressive design, rugged construction, and the many options available.
While the Tigermoth is ready to hit the road on day one, our cargo trailer conversion took some time to build before it was ready for adventure. Obviously, an enclosed cargo trailer off the lot is nothing more than a shell, so you're going to have to make decisions on the design to make sure it meets your needs. Here's a recent video where we talked about questions you should ask yourself before you start a cargo trailer build to make sure it's right for you: https://youtu.be/fCZLN7Do9_I
To be clear, we probably aren't the target for Taxa Outdoors marketing efforts. From my perspective, the Tigermoth is perfect for an adventurous person or couple, probably age 20-35, who don't want to purchase a 22 foot (or larger) rv because their smaller, fuel efficient vehicle couldn't pull it. They're hitting the national or state parks in a specific area for a week or two, then heading back to their jobs in the city. That's not us.
In a cargo trailer conversion, you can build it out to address all your needs, then hit the road for weeks, months, or even years at a time. It will become your actual home on the road and you can build one out for a fraction of the cost of just about any RV. Even including the initial cost of our 6x10 cargo trailer, our total investment is under $6000 after 3 years and several remodels. The cost of the standard Taxa Outdoors Tigermoth is just under $20000, about 70% more than our total cargo trailer conversion project.
That being said, you can finance a Taxa Outdoors Tigermoth and probably pay under $200 a month until it's paid for (after a down payment, of course). With a cargo trailer, it will be all out of pocket, but you can do individual projects to spread out the costs. Additionally, you could hit the road the same day you purchase a Tigermoth - that's not the case with an empty cargo trailer.
The bottom line is WHAT WORKS FOR YOU? Only you can answer that, but if you're looking to live more simply while finding more adventure, don't keep putting it off. None of us are getting any younger, so figure out what it is that motivates you and get moving!
