Smooth stucco explained,
Spider crack or egg-shelling smooth stucco.
Hard steel trowel stucco finishing.
We were hired to give the addition, Old world Charm, complete with color variations. When I mentioned smooth finishes tent to egg shell this was also desired, thus I accepted this task.
It's application is easy and fun to apply or for the average interior tapper as all that required is the ability to use trowels properly.
Folks, I might add the point of this video is to say that with Smooth finishes that are troweled on, there is a tendency for spider cracking or egg-shelling. This is mentioned on every bag sold in the USA.
How to apply is easy, some folks as mentioned in the comments to use small trowels, this is their choice, and doesn't matter with master craftsman skills.
Other say apply a fiberglass mesh coating over the base coat, this adds substantial cost to the overall cost, we live in the real world where we are not hired by billionaires, so cost matters to all of our clients.
Besides the way we attached the lathing, two separate sheets of aluminum sided polystyrene consisting both of two inches plus two layers of two ply 60 minute paper with 17 gage stucco netting was our preferred lathing method.
This can be seen in a separate video. Thus the need for a fiber glass mesh coat would be ignorant as the polystyrene boards stop the substrate walls from expanding by blocking the suns heat and adds in insulation values far above all California codes.
FYI, the Dry-Vit and Stow stucco system, both use one inch of polystyrene board to block the suns rays and to add insulations values to all their commercial building.
Again this architect used 4 inches of polystyrene board with outer coating of aluminum.
Have I seen in all my years someone overbuild an insulation value, yes, only once, 33 years ago I did the same system to insulate my inner attic ceiling under my homes roof, where I live to this current day. Now it's difficult to get cell phone reception unless I go under my opened skylight, LoL.

If interested in how we applied our base coat, https://youtu.be/o8Kbf4QYn3s/
This fact far exceeds the need for applying a fiberglass mesh netting to entire exterior wall surface. Have I done this?
Of course we have, this is not the point of this video. Egg-shelling or hair-lining is, this fact is one every bag sold in the USA.
As a rule apply two coats when applying what's known as a Smooth Mission or Santa Barbera stucco finish, or a hard steel trowel finish.
Why? Excellent question.
After the walls are hydrated properly "Not Dripping wet", we apply the first coat, when that coat sets and drys out, we apply the second coat. Why?
After the first coat has set theres less chances of blistering, Whats Blistering?
Thats when a coat is not set up properly then another coat is applied, this excessive elbow grease or necessary strength to trowel it down tight can actually adhere both coats and pull the original one off, thats blistering.
What we had there was minor egg-shelling or spider cracking, this is also mentioned on the bags will happen. Does this effect the integrity of the stucco finish? No.
These finishes still last hundreds of years.
Why such a large crack by the door, the door was hitting the wall, that door weighed over a thousand pounds.
When the owner installed the door stops we then went back for some touch ups.
What causes all stucco to crack, Vibrations and or setting.
Vibrations to stucco is like Kryptonite to Superman not good.
Now you know!
The product is called "Santa Barabers Smooth finish," sold in 94 pound bags at your nearest plastering yard, such as "Westside Building Materials" These bags are sold with separate color tinted stucco pigments about two pound each.
To achieve this color we doubled the bags of tint. This color is called Southern Moss.
Lastly, La Habra stucco was the first maker of colored cementitious coat maintenance free finishes back in 1926, Western Stucco came out with their version around 1940.
