This is Perky. Perky is a silly name, because the Perkins P4C under the hood is anything but. This 1959 Plymouth was ordered as a taxi, and converted to diesel power when new. It's one of very few examples of the breed surviving in the US today. As a matter of fact, I don't know that anyone else in America (or even the world) is daily driving one of these cars, let alone cruising one on the freeway. If you happen to own one, I don't recommend that you attempt the latter - and in today's video, I'll show you why. This time, I get to the bottom of the abysmal lack of horsepower in the Perkins Plymouth with a deep dive into the magic that makes the injection pump's governor work. I then make the brilliant decision to test the newfound oomph with a highway run. Even with almost all 58 horses in the stable... this is going to be a slow ride.
