The Bartenieff Fundamentals is the somatic movement method developed by somatic pioneer Irmgard Bartenieff. The "Basic 6" are primary to her method and establish the building blocks for this neuro-developmental approach.
In this video, I demonstrate one preparatory exercise and the Basic 6 in series as outlined in her book, "Body Movement: Coping with the Environment". I demonstrate each somatic movement and discuss the exercises with Bartenieff’s language from her text as well as from my personal experience. The Basic 6 includes: Thigh Lift, Pelvic Forward Shift, Pelvic Lateral Shift, Body-half, Knee Drop, and Arm Circles. The preparatory exercise included is Rock and Roll.
I have used these somatic movements and their variations in my own practice and with clients for over 20 years with amazing results. (See my channel page for further explorations). This somatic approach has certainly been a keystone for my own creative and professional work in the movement field and my passion for supporting functional and expressive change by working from the felt-sense, moving from the inside out.
