👉 Strings

Dave Lee: "We put an .11 on the high E on all his other guitars in hopes they would be less likely to break. And it worked... usually."

👉 Pickups

"...The actual pickups we settled on were stock, brand new, Fender Strat pickups. The same ones Fender was putting in their brand new American Fender Strats at the time..."

Dave Lee: "Those guitars were left stock..."

Dave Lee: "I don't remember the exact height. But nothing unusual. Probably close to factory set."

👉 Amps

Dave Lee: "John always knew in his mind what he wanted tonewise. His original vision was a guitar amp and a bass amp mixed together (split) with the Boss chorus pedal. Up to the last day we worked together (and probably still today), he always referred to the Major as the "bass head". I think it was Rick Rubin that turned him on to the Majors during the Californication sessions."

Dave Lee: "...If you "jump" the two channels, it turns the two volume knobs into a master volume and gain control. So, that's what we did."

Dave Lee: "Clean channel on that rig (main Silver Jubilee)..."

http://www.jfeffects.com.br/2017/03/dave-mail-40-channel-on-silver-jubilee.html

Dave Lee: "The Major was very clean and as loud as we could get it. Very punchy. The Jubilee had just a little grit to it. But also mostly clean. All of his distortion was from outboard pedals. And his attack on the strings.

Dave Lee: "The gain and volume are pushed as far as they can without reaching any real distortion. Gives supreme "punch"."

👉 Speakers

Dave Lee: "This is going to surprise a lot of people, but Celestion G12t-75 speakers were in his cabinets. Those were the ones that came in the cabinets when we bought them. He liked the sound..."

👉 Microphones

John #Frusciante (Guitar Player, November 2006): “I use a Shure SM57 positioned on axis a couple of inches from the cone.”

👉 Importance of the CE-1

Dave Lee: "I get asked this question often by engineers. I would say the most important key to getting that tone is the #BOSSCE1 chorus pedal. That "level" knob has its own kind of gain structure..."
