(13 Apr 1974) RR7415 SOUTH AFRICA: THE CRACKS IN APARTHEID
On April 24th 1974 South Africa's two million voters, all
of them white, go to the polls to elect a new parliament
for a nation of 20 million people. Victory seems assured
to the Nationalists, rulers of South Africa since 1948 and
architects of apartheid, the policy of strict racial
segregation. But apartheid is now being challenged by
economic pressures, and restrictions against non-whites
in jobs, sports, etc. are being relaxed. We assess
these changes and talk to a leading multi-racialist, Mrs.
Helen Suzman, about the future.
