On today’s program, Caty Weaver and Mario Ritter, Jr. host the show. Caty tells listeners what they are going to hear.
(:51) First, Bryan Lynn reports on a huge piece of ice in the Antarctic Ocean. Scientists are worried that the world’s largest iceberg could harm wildlife on a distant island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Researchers say the iceberg is moving toward South Georgia island, a main mating ground for wildlife, including penguins and seals. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/huge-iceberg-could-threaten-penguins-in-the-south-atlantic-ocean/7953686.html
(7:05) Then, Caty returns to tell a story about lizards that are causing big problems on the island of Taiwan in the South China Sea. The reptiles, called iguanas, from Central America and the Caribbean area were brought to the island as pets and released into the wild. Now they are reproducing so successfully that they threaten agriculture. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/taiwan-to-kill-tens-of-thousands-of-iguanas-to-protect-farmland/7951912.html
(13:43) After that, Greg Stachel and Jill Robbins present Ed Tips. This week, the examine how to write an effective email. Writing a good email can mean the difference between someone reading it and getting a response and someone ignoring it. Greg and Jill offer advice for getting your email read. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/how-to-write-a-good-email/5649722.html
(17:23) Finally, Jill returns with Andrew Smith for another Lesson of the Day. Today, they explain words that aren’t words themselves but reflect fast pronunciations of groups of words. In Lesson 24 of Let’s Learn Englis, Anna, the series star, goes to Washington, D.C.’s Folklife Festival. Anna uses some reduced forms of terms that Americans often day. Jill and Andrew closely examine some terms including “whaddaya call it,” and they tell some jokes! https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/lets-learn-english-lesson-24-yesterday-was-amazing/3439164.html
Then Caty and Mario sign off.
