Mid spring is time for a second phase of sowing. There is now space under cover for new sowings. Early sowings are of cold and frost tolerant plants such as lettuce, spinach, onions, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, broad beans and beetroot. These are now transplanted outside and the transplants are under fleece covers for a while yet, in this zone 8 climate which continues to be frosty here, in late April and potentially until mid May. See the next video about covers in spring https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwcQ4THPeaM Most of the seeds and plants in this video are sensitive to frost and cold, so they benefit from sowing, under cover only, from three to four weeks before last frost date. Later sowings are possible too and may succeed better, because they do better with warmth.
