Made in 2000 as a DVD, producer NICK LERA’s film brings us the best of Spain’s main line heritage steam, plus special features on steam’s heyday in 1967. Starting with an elegant 141F locomotive on a unique scenic run in Spain’s North West from Vigo to Santiago we then see the star of the preserved roster, Lleida’s newly restored Beyer-Garratt 242F in the stunning Noguera Pallaressa gorge on the mountain line to Pobla de Segur in the Pyrenees. Lera makes full use of special invitations to film from the footplate on both locomotives, complementing classic views of lineside action in this beautiful country. 1967 sequences comprise high quality 16mm film directed by Peter Handford showing action with six major classes including big 4-8-4s on passenger at Castejon and the impressive Pacific Garratt whose haunting chime whistle echoes across the Sierra in a nostalgic finale. UPDATE: The ‘PRESENT’ in the film’s title currently (2025) no longer applies, as steam has been banned from RENFE lines pending a review of compatibility with EU mandated upgrades to digital train control systems.
