Spirit of Progress footage with added sound | Spirit of Progress 86th Anniversary.
86 years ago on the 24th of November 1937 the Spirit of Progress made its first run from Melbourne to Albury on the NSW border, in 1954 the S class pacific's were scrapped and the train went on to be pulled by B class diesel electric locomotives then in 1962 the north east standard gauge line was opened and the spirit of progress then ran on the standard gauge and ran all the way to Sydney swapping for NSWGR locomotives at Albury, on the 2nd of August 1986 the spirit of progress made its last run, ever since the heritage groups have ran special heritage trains to recreate the Spirit.
most of the S type Carriages have been preserved as well as many heritage diesel locomotives that pulled the Spirit.
