Today I’m finally starting a year long exploration of some basic embroidery stitches, starting with running stitch. I don’t really know how this journey will unfold, but I’ll be looking out for unexpected opportunities along the way.

While the running stitch is often used for neat, consistent sewing, I encourage you to embrace imperfection and play with colors, textures, and stitch placement. The beauty of Saori-inspired sewing is that there are no rules—each stitch is an opportunity to express your mood, your style, and your personal touch.

What you’ll need:
-A sewing needle: I like a medium-sized hand-sewing needle with a large eye, but feel free to experiment with different sizes
-Thread: try using colorful threads in different fibres (cotton, silk, wool or linen) to add personality to your stitches—think beyond the basic
-Fabric: start with something you already have, and don’t hesitate to experiment with textured or patterned materials if you like
-Scissors to trim your thread
-A thimble can be useful, or not. It's up to you, same with a hoop. I don't usually use either

This tutorial is perfect for beginners who want to get comfortable with hand sewing, but it’s also a great introduction to the world of Saori-inspired sewing I don't know if that's a thing, but it should be) —where every stitch has the freedom to be imperfect, creative, and full of character. Think of this not just as a skill-building video, but a chance to explore your artistic side, turning every running stitch into a form of self-expression.

Why embrace Saori-inspired hand sewing? Hand sewing is an amazing way to slow down, connect with the fabric, and let your creative energy flow. By incorporating a Saori mindset, you can shift from just making “useful” crafts to something truly personal and expressive. The running stitch becomes a tool for making art with your hands.

Take your time with the project, experiment with your own unique ideas, and enjoy the process. This is your opportunity to play, improvise, and stitch freely, creating something that’s entirely yours.

Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more creative sewing tutorials, where I’ll continue to explore different hand-sewing techniques with a focus on individuality and creative expression. Let me know in the comments how you made your running stitch unique—what colors, textures, or patterns did you try? I’d love to see how you bring your own personal flair to this simple stitch!

Happy stitching—and may your sewing be as free and creative as your imagination!
