On the 21st of September, Steamrail Victoria operated a special tour from Melbourne to Castlemaine with steam locomotive R761.

The trip commemorated 40 years since Steamrail restored the locomotive having its first passenger hauled run on a members train on the 19th December, 1984. That special ran to Woodend, which at the time, had water and turning facilities. As this exact trip couldn't be replicated, the anniversary special ran further to Castlemaine, where the locomotive was serviced and turned before returning to Melbourne.

2024 also marks 50 years since R761 was withdrawn from service after hauling its then final fan trip on the 5th of September, 1974.

At Castlemaine, J549 was hauling the regular service on the Victorian Goldfields Railway and the opportunity was taken to get a photo of the two steam locomotives side-by-side having both been repainted earlier in 2024.
A massive thankyou to all volunteers past and present for preserving this locomotive.
