Stem cells are divided into Embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are subdivided into Totipotent cells and Pluripotent cells. totipotent refers to the fact that they have total potential to develop into any cell in the body. Soon, and before the embryo implants in the uterus, a mass of around 150–200 cells forms. They are called blastocysts. Blastocysts contain Embryonic stem cells. Adult Stem Cells are somatic cells and tissue-specific. It remains in our body throughout our lives. They help in repair and damage processes. Based on their capacity they are divided into three types. Multipotent, Oligopotent, and Unipotent. Hematopoietic stem cells are an example for multipotent; lymphoid or myeloid stem cells are oligopotent. Unipotent cells can only produce cells of one kind, which is their own type. Stem cells also show promise for treating some diseases that currently have no cure. Stem cell therapy is also known as regenerative medicine, can be used to cure more than 80 types of diseases such as blood cancer (leukemia), rheumatoid arthritis, heart problems, kidney damages, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease etc. Bone marrow transplantation was successful for cancer patients since 1986. Donors can donate their stem cells also umbilical cord blood can be saved in stem cell banks for future used. In India, Jeevan is the only government/public umbilical cord blood bank. There are few private cord blood banks also. A lot of Stem cell therapy researches are under trial worldwide.
