With modern BMWs, before we can get our BMW tuned/flashed, we need to first bench-unlock the DME (Digital Motor Electronics, aka ECU or Electronic Control Unit). Only then, we will be able to flash any sort of tune to the DME.
Typically, it requires you to either physically ship your DME out to a performance shop; or that you visit a performance shop and perform a bench-unlock on-site.
Note that M-Link, or other forms of bench-unlock, only works with Pre-June 2020 MG1 DMEs. Post-June DMEs are required to be physically sent to Femto, or other performance shops that partner with Femto, to perform a "Femto Unlock".
I found the easiest way that you will be able to tell which kind of unlock you need, is to connect your car with a tuning app via an OBD2 WiFi adapter. Whether it is Bootmod3, MHD, MG Flasher, etc. They will have a line somewhere that would tell you if it needs an OBD Unlock (No Bench-Unlock required), or a Bench-Unlock.
And with a Bench-Unlock requirement, you can determine if you will need a regular Bench-Unlock (that M-Link can take care of you, if the DME Manufacture Date is before June 2020), or a Femto-Unlock (if the DME Manufacture Date is after June 2020).
