After the release of The Thousand-Year Door, Intelligent Systems and Nintendo decided that stepping back a dimension would be a good way to switch things for the next Paper Mario game, Super Paper Mario. It marked the first gameplay shift the Paper Mario series would undertake, though while it is criticized by some for moving away from the formula of the previous games, it also managed to find an audience of its own.
