IN FEBRUARY 2021 The BBC aired the documentary ‘ Stonehenge: The Lost Circle Revealed’. Leading up to the broadcast and afterwards, there were many breathless headlines in the mainstream - and even in the more sober ‘scientific’ publications - giving the impression that the remains of a stone circle in Wales had been discovered and that Stonehenge was built from the stones from that circle. The programme was an excellent and well put-together show, and told a compelling story. If you’re in the UK, you can view it on BBC iPlayer here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000s5xm/stonehenge-the-lost-circle-revealed ... and for comparison, Mike Parker Pearson's original paper is here: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/antiquity/article/original-stonehenge-a-dismantled-stone-circle-in-the-preseli-hills-of-west-wales/B7DAA4A7792B4DAB57DDE0E3136FBC33 However … the certainty with which the hypothesis was imbued in the film (and consequently in the media) was, in our opinion, misleading. Here we muse on a few of our misgivings and hopefully give you some food for thought on the way archaeology is sometimes reported in the media. We’ll be doing a deeper dive in our upcoming podcast for March. 🔵 PATREON: We have a friendly and enthusiastic Patreon community helping us create our content through monthly subscription.
