Making a stove jack is not as hard as you think, all it takes are a few easy to get supplies and a little bit of time.
Stove jacks allow you to vent a stove pipe through a tent wall while protecting the tent from damage by the hot pipe.
I am working on a project using an older dome tent for a winter camping hot tent. To do this, I built a stove and of course the problem then comes up of running the vent out, that is where a stove jack comes into play.
There are a huge number of designs for stove jacks, from coated fiberglass fabric like I am using to metal units and hybrid metal and silicone designs.
When it comes to commercially available stove jacks there are two firms I would look at Four Dog Stove, which offers a stove jack with a silicone insert for $55 and Bear Paw Wilderness Designs which is a plain fire and water proof panel starting at $28 for small and going up to $32 for the extra-large size. Bear Paw will custom make stove jacks so for me, this would be the route I would take if purchasing a stove jack.
But I have decided to make my own.
Making the stove jack from fiberglass cloth and silicone is rather straight forward. Coat the fiberglass with silicone sealant to create a waterproof and heat resistant section to pass the stove pipe through. Fiberglass is fireproof on its own and silicone can take high temperatures and adds waterproofing to the stove jack.
Here is a list of materials I used so far in creating the stove jack:
Bondo Fiberglass Cloth 46.5x25 inches, from Walmart for $4.27
Red Devil Clear Hi-Temp Silicone Sealant from Menards for $7.11
Hem Tape for edge of stove jack, $1.50

This is only the first step. Now that the stove jack is made, it is time to install it onto the tent and that will be happening in part two, so check back soon.
