Fred Herzog is another one of the great colorists from the 1950's. Born in Stuggart, Germany, his family was forced to flee after the World War II aerial bombings. After the untimely death of his parents, Herzog dropped out of school and started working as a crew member on various ships. In 1952, he relocated to Canada and by 1953 had settled on Vancouver. In the years that followed he became a medical photographer by trade, and, much like Saul Leiter, began to build an impressive oeuvre of color work documenting the streets of Vancouver. At the time this was not respected in the art and photography communities due to the strong feelings of black and white work being the only serious work.
