This shopping street developed when Yokohama opened its port and was home to many stores catering to foreigners. Motomachi Shopping Street is 600m long and has a stylish and sophisticated Western atmosphere. It is lined with boutiques, retail stores, cafes and restaurants, attracting visitors from all over Japan. This area, located close to the country's largest Chinatown, is famous as the birthplace of the "Hamatora" fashion of the 1970s and 1980s and is famous for its international atmosphere. Mihama, Kitamura and Fukuzo are the three major brands that represent this fashion and are still very popular today. Originally a quiet farming and fishing town, the hills overlooking Motomachi became a foreign settlement and changed the area. The backstreets are dotted with stylish cafes, unique general stores and well-known restaurants, making it a great place to stroll around.
