While strong to severe thunderstorms aren't exactly common here in the winter, we do tend to have at least one per season and these storms can be quite destructive if all the ingredients are just right, thanks to the wintertime jet stream. This line of storms reached forward movement speeds of over 100MPH, making for a high risk of destructive winds, should upper level winds get mixed to the surface. While a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was not issued for this storm (a Special Weather Statement was issued), these storms met the criteria for severe with wind gusts at nearby Uptown Charlotte measuring in at over 60 MPH. My personal weather station, which is situated 12ft above the ground and not in the best spot for wind measurement, measured a 35MPH gust as the storms were moving in. No tornadoes were reported from this storm in this area.
Snow fell here just days later.
