Video Not Working? Fix It Now

1990 Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub with a decent amount of rust on the internal parts. Full strip, ultrasonic bath and rebuild.

KEY POINTS:
5:40 Sloped edge of pawl to the outside. Spring goes behind and below.
6:15 Short end of pawl to the inside. Spring goes behind and above.
8:12 Finger tighten the cone, then back off AT LEAST 1/4 turn and UP TO 1/2 turn to allow fitting of keyed washer. The driver should have a little play.
9:01 Again, finger tighten the cone, then back off 1/4 turn or so. Hold cone in place when tightening lock nut to ensure there is still play on the axle.

Unlike normal hubs, Sturmey Archer 3-speed hubs are actually designed to have some play. This prevents excessive wear on the driver and internal parts. Over-tightening is a common mistake.

P.S. Older versions of the AW hub will have a bearing cup instead of a plastic bearing race behind the driver. Same process though, simply pop the cup's lid and clean the loose ball bearings.
