Style and Substance: The Book of Common Prayer

When the BCP was first brought up - I didn’t understand what was being referred to, what it was for, what the implications and meaning of the contents meant - atheists like me don’t need to pray much - so prayer is pretty uncommon in my life.

In my film on the Oxford movement I discovered the connection between things I care about (beauty, addressing poverty) and what would otherwise, on the surface, seem a conservative force in the Anglican church. Issues of left and right - well, they are unhelpful here.

Similarly I discover that the BCP is emblematic of what once divided and what now, broadly, unites the western church; but it's also about beauty, poetry, the feel of words in the mouth, the emotional connection between the meanings of words and the meanings between words. How the archaic can also be both solemn and profound.

Thanks to my contributors - any mistakes that make it to the film are entirely my own.

Errors: In a couple of places I refer to the BCP as the book of common pray (not prayer). Soz. By all means complain about it in the comments - but let me know you read this apology by using the phrase "I think you'll find" somewhere in your comment. I will enjoy it enormously.
