Sunny is 90 days old, Gizmo is 86 days old.
Congratulations Sunny! Sunny fledged 6/2 10:46. She flew in the direction of the Roost Tree (RT), showing off her beautiful strong wings. This was the first fledge from the attic - Spirit and Simba fledged from the High Perch.
At 11:51 the CamOps found her in the top branches of the RT Looks like she spent the whole day in the RT and did not work up enough courage to fly back to the nest (where the feesh is being served). Maybe tomorrow?
The evening pan also found Jackie, Shadow and Sunny in the RT. Gizmo is about to spend her first night alone on the nest.
Sweet dreams Jackie, Shadow and Sunny, together in the RT.🥰 Sweet dreams Gizmo, you get the nest all to yourself! 🥳 We love you! ❤
Juveniles usually come back to the nest in a few hours or days. They will hang out in the general vicinity of the nest for about 3-12 weeks, before they disperse on their Grand Journeys.
For the first few years, they will be nomadic and may travel thousands of miles away from their natal territories. SoCal fledglings are seen as far North as British Columbia, as far East as Yellowstone, as far South as Baja California. Once they reach maturity around 4-5 years, they tend to return to within 100 miles from their natal territories to breed.
A poem from our YouTube volunteer Jole:
At 10:46, the sky stood still,
As little wings took flight from hill.
Sunny rose with morning light,
A feathered heart in fearless flight.
Our cheers rang out, a joyful sound,
As talons left familiar ground.
Yet in that cheer, a silence grew—
A part of us took flight there too.
We watched her stretch toward skies unknown,
A life once sheltered now her own.
The nest, once full of gentle care,
Now sways a little light, more bare.
Our hearts are full—of pride, of grace—
But aching from that empty space.
To raise, to love, then let them go,
Is all we’re ever meant to know.
So fly, dear Sunny, brave and free,
Your wings now hold our legacy.
The world awaits, your sky is wide—
We’ll keep the nest, with hearts open wide.
