Here we look at a Kia hybrid that revs uncontrollably when switching to gas engine mode. We
road test the car to attempt to replicate the problem, which becomes quite obvious at around
twenty kilometers an hour, right at the time where the electric motor stops producing torque and
the gas engine takes over.
Like we always do, we scanned ALL of the modules for codes. Surprisingly, there were no
codes present.
We display a diagram describing how the power is applied in both modes. By understanding the
operation of both motors and how power transmission is controlled in each mode, we know
where to concentrate our diagnosis. After narrowing it down to power transmission problem, we
observe the scan data showing hydraulic pressures. By observing the hydraulic pressure that
controls the clutch pack, we narrow the problem down even more.
