Syrian forces have been deployed in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana to end "chaos and illegal checkpoints by outlaw groups" following deadly clashes with Druze gunmen, state media reported. Tensions have been mounting since the fatal shooting of a defence ministry employee at a checkpoint on 28 February. A local security chief vowed to arrest those responsible, stating the suspects had "refused" to surrender, while Druze leaders pledged to "withdraw protection from all offenders and outlaws".
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned Syrian authorities "not to harm the Druze" and declared, "If the regime harms the Druze—it will be harmed by us." He claimed Jaramana was "currently under attack by Syrian regime forces" and suggested allowing Druze communities from Syria to work in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt condemned Israeli attempts to "sabotage" and "fragment the region", warning that Israel aims to "turn Druze into border guards". He stated, "Greater Israel, yes, it seeks to achieve Greater Israel," urging Arab leaders to act "before it is too late".
Syria’s interim government, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, has sought to assure minorities of their protection. A national dialogue was described as a "rare historical opportunity" to rebuild Syria, and a "committee of experts" was appointed to draft a constitutional framework.
Meanwhile, the US Army announced on 1 March that it had killed a senior military leader of Hurras al-Din, a Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda.
