What Is Rest Defence in Football?
Rest defence is a crucial tactical concept in football. When a team attacks, some players push forward to create and finish chances, while others stay deeper to provide support, control spaces, and prevent counter-attacks.
This defensive structure, known as rest defence, helps lock opponents in their half and ensures stability when possession is lost. Most teams maintain a 5-5 split between attackers and rest defenders, though this can shift depending on the game situation.
The term rest defence comes from the German restverteidigung, meaning "remaining defence."
In this video we discuss the different Rest Defence structures, such as the 2+2, 1+4, 2+3, 3+2 and so on. We also analyse Barcelona’s Rest Defence in tactical analysis of three games—Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid, Barcelona vs Real Sociedad, and Benfica vs Barcelona.
