170 miles walking around Lake Tahoe on the Tahoe Rim Trail... In super ultralight fashion! As I am only carrying 4.5lbs of backpacking gear, while the rest of my pack weight comes from my camera kit. I think a shorter trail like this is a great opportunity to carry very little, to dial in gear specifically for weather, and to try new things. Afterall this trip will only take me about 5 days, so I can really pair things down to the exact conditions I'll face, without having to carry a lot of the gear I normally would for a longer trip with more variables.

Of note I am leaving my puffy jacket at home and only carrying a Kuiu fleece, I am leaving my rain jacket at home if the weather holds up and only carrying a Montbell wind jacket, I am carrying a 30 degree enlightened equipment enigma quilt, I am testing out a new peak designs camera clip to try and find the ultimate way to carry a big bulky camera during thru hikes. I am leaving my wind pants at home, I am leaving my tripod at home. I am trying some new ombraz sunglasses, some new grip6 socks, a new camera lens. In general, I am trying a lot of things! And we will see how this goes.
I hear of problems with bears around lake tahoe, I hear of problems with water availability, long water carries, or dry stretches. But I am confident in my 11,000 miles of hiking long distance trails in a very minimalist and ultralight way to be fine.
Since completing the Arizona Trail this spring I have been itching to get out and do another long hike again, so here I am! After this I may do more trails in the area, and later this fall I plan on doing the colorado trail. So here's to another thru hike, I hope you enjoy!
