The North Link Railway is a single-track railway stretching from Su’aoxin Station to Hualien Station, with a total length of 81.6 kilometers. Construction began on December 25, 1973, and the entire line was completed and opened to traffic on February 1, 1980, taking six and a half years to build.
As the North Link Railway traverses the Central Mountain Range and crosses numerous rivers and streams, the project involved the construction of 16 tunnels and 91 bridges, with a total tunnel length reaching 31 kilometers. The construction was undertaken by RSEA and faced numerous challenges, including 10 typhoons and six rainy seasons. More than 3,800 large-scale construction vehicles were deployed, and for over six years, workers spent five years in dark tunnels operating heavy machinery.
Thanks to these efforts, the North Link Railway was successfully completed, reducing travel time between Su’ao and Hualien from four hours to just one hour, significantly improving transportation and economic development in Taiwan’s eastern region.
