In northern Alaska, the culture of the Inupiat people is focused on whales. Each spring, men and women go to tuvaq - the ice near the water - in search of migrating green whales from the Bering Sea towards the Canadian Arctic. When they see a whale, a crew pushes an umiak boat into the water. Usually, there is only one chance to launch a harpoon. If the hunt is successful, everyone in the village will be able to receive a share in the meat division.
In this episode I share a true cultural immersion accompanied by native people and tasting one of the most important typical dishes in Alaska - whale meat.
