I currently don't have the skills or the capacity to draw from imagination. I am currently in the training and learning phase of this journey as I actively work on training my visual library. With this particular video upload, I wanted to focus on showcasing the sketchbooks that I had been working on for the last few months. As I mentioned in the video, this is the fourth attempt in my life to learn how to draw, and it is also the first time that I haven’t quit in a matter of weeks. I can say with confidence that… as you get older, you have a better understanding of how to learn effectively. Well, at least that is the case for me… I felt like in the previous times when I had attempted to draw, I was too ambitious and was trying to learn how to do so many things at a given moment, such as trying to draw an entire body. However, that led to nothing but frustration and disappointment. When it comes to learning a new and complex skill, it is important to chunk the information that needs to be learned into manageable pieces. I came to realize that rather than drawing to draw an entire body at the beginning of my journey, I would focus on something simple, such as the head or even eyes, to allow me to develop a foundation. Even though this video only shows 72 days of this journey, I can reassure you that I am still drawing consistently every day and seeing gradual growth in my skills. Another thing I find to be crazy is that a few days ago… I learned how tremendously helpful it is to draw with regular pencils??? Everything in these sketchbooks was done with a .3 mechanical pencil… and I was eventually able to adapt to such a thin pencil lead, but it made sense why I was struggling a lot with drawing certain things. But now that I am using traditional pencils in varying sizes… I felt like drawing had become much easier. Even though I was learning with such an inefficient approach, I do think that it also made me better at drawing because I was conditioned to be more precise with my lines and gentle with the pressure I was adding to the pencil I was using. As for why I was using a mechanical pencil instead of a traditional one… I just thought mechanical pencils looked cooler lol. Once I finish a few more sketchbooks, I will make a part two for this video. Until then, take care. Best, Steve H.
