In this video, we filmed the building process of a temple bell tower from “chopping” to “erection.
All of the wood that forms the foundation of the bell tower is carefully carved and cut by craftsmen. Advanced techniques are required to bring out the grain and maximize the characteristics of the wood. Watch the craftsmen at work with all their hearts, making no compromises at all.
The erection of the bell tower framework, which is several meters high, is a truly grand event. Heavy beams and pillars are carefully transported and erected by a number of craftsmen. The moment when the timbers fit together perfectly and the framework of the bell tower gradually takes shape is a moving scene.
Traditional Japanese architecture is about more than just making things. It is a “sustainable architecture” that will be used for hundreds of years to come, and a design philosophy that emphasizes harmony with nature.
This video is not just about building, but also about passing on the skills and spirit left behind by our predecessors to the next generation. Traditional carpentry techniques and building methods have remained unchanged for hundreds of years. We hope you can sense such deep meaning through this video.
Location: Honenji Temple (53rd temple in Kazahaya Shikoku)
