Learn the basic terminology for the four operations! In addition, we have addends and a sum. In subtraction, we have a minuend, subtrahend, and difference. In multiplication, there are factors and the product. In division, we have a dividend divided by a divisor, giving the quotient. Besides learning the terms, we also practice writing simple algebraic expressions from word phrases that use those terms. For example, we write an expression for "the quotient of the quantity (2 + 8) and the quantity (1 + 3)", and for "The difference of 5 and y divided by the sum 2 + 4", and other similar expressions.
