A Sparkling thani by legends Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman mama and Sri Vikku mama, in the concert of Sri Kalyanaraman with Sri Lalgudi.
Many a time, thani avarthanam is not about just complex mathematical kOrvais and koraippus. The ability of a Laya Vidwan/ Vidushi to hold the rapt attention of the audience through spell binding sollu development and sarvalaghu patterns, conveys a lot on an artist's vidwath and artistry.
Coming to the subject of this Thani in Adhi thalam 1-kalai being an epitome of grammar, it may be of interest to note that the edam of the thani is at 3/4 after samam (Colloquially 3-thalli after samam). Any lesser artiste would have taken the easier way out by playing few rounds of sarvalaghu and playing a gathi bEdham from samam-samam calling this Grammar violation as "Poetic-License". As per the commonly accepted tenets of grammar, the rule is to play the thani to the edam in which it was given to you. For such an edam as this case, it is not possible to play any kind of Gathi bEdham and precisely thats what happens here, as the thani strictly adheres to the grammar, without involving any kind of gathi bEdhams, beautiful sarvalaghu mEETu-chApu sollus, with even the koraippus and the mOhrA-kOrvais being played edam-edam, making it a Technical & Grammatical masterclass!
The supreme artistry of both the legends is in display, with spellbinding sarvalaghu patterns, interspersed with abhiprAyams highlighting the edam here and there. The balance especially in UKS mama's vAdhyam, the clarity of arai chApu etc makes it a fascinating experience. An intimate atmosphere coupled with an appreciative audience, makes this all the more enjoyable. Hope you all enjoy it.
PS:: Good earphones recommended.
