The Jerk follows the absurd life journey of Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin), a lovable but clueless man who was adopted and raised by a poor Black family in Mississippi. Despite being deeply naive, he sets out on a quest to find his "special purpose" in life after realizing he's not actually Black.
Navin embarks on a series of misadventures, working odd jobs, inventing a ridiculous gadget (the Opti-Grab), and stumbling into fortune—only to lose it all in hilariously tragic ways. Along the way, he falls in love with a motorcycle stuntwoman (Bernadette Peters) and becomes the target of an insane sniper.
